'Great plan': Enzo Fernandez impressed by what Graham Potter changed in Chelsea's tactics against Dortmund

Enzo Fernandez has told The Evening Standard that Graham Potter instructed his Chelsea team to run in behind a lot more against Borussia Dortmund.

The Blues picked up their biggest win of the season when they turned around a first leg Champions League deficit.

After falling to a 1-0 loss in Germany, goals from Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz helped change their fortunes, whilst also maintained their supporters’ hope and faith for this season.

The performance was a complete longshot from how Chelsea have usually played this season, as they languish in 10th in the Premier League.

When the pressure has been on Potter the firmest though, he has delivered a performance the fans have been used to seeing in this competition over the years.

After victory in the league with a new three-back system, the former Brighton man stuck to it when they needed two goals to book their place in the quarter-finals.

One player who prospered from the new system was Fernandez, who has had more opportunity to share his technical ability in his new position.

The World Cup winner has claimed he was left very impressed by the manager’s tactics for the big game.

He said: “We’re going to be staying on this path and we hope things carry on improving. It was a great plan from our coaches for the game. We had trust that the team could do it.

“We had more people running in behind and many people working at the back. We just had to do our jobs and follow that plan.”

There will be an importance for the Blues to maintain this ability now, if only to use Premier League games to build momentum for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
