'It's difficult': Brendan Rodgers explains the problem Graham Potter is trying to deal with at Chelsea

Brendan Rodgers thinks Graham Potter has a really difficult job at Chelsea working with an oversized squad.

Leicester manager Rodgers, whose side takes on Chelsea this Saturday in the Premier League, does have a lot of sympathy for his opposite number.

Potter, 47, took charge as the head coach at Stamford Bridge nearly six months ago.

It’s been a real struggle for the Blues in domestic games this season, but they have the saving grace of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals earlier this week.

Despite the luxury of bringing in plenty of talented individuals in January, Potter has been left with a first-team group at Chelsea that is simply too big.

Ahead of Leicester vs Chelsea this weekend, Rodgers has been discussing his side’s next opponents.

He believes Potter has a sizable job on his hands in west London, so definitely deserves time to get things right.

“From Graham’s perspective, he’s very new into there. It’s a difficult challenge because he has so many new players. It’s difficult to keep 30 players happy. It’s just time. The club has gone through a lot of change. At the top clubs, you may not get time, but he is deserving of it. They’ve had a good couple of results. When you make structural changes, it takes time to settle,” Rodgers said.

Most would agree that Potter is now at a stage where he needs to start picking some consistent starting line-ups.

He’s made so many changes to his Blues XI on a frequent basis, partly due to injuries, partly to check out his deep squad.

It does look like things may be coming together in the last week with two positive results, though.

A change to a back three immediately makes the team look a lot better defensively and offensively, so let’s hope it’s familiar faces that start away to Leicester.

Chelsea need to do Potter a massive favour at the end of the season by overseeing a huge clear-out in the summer to give him a smaller squad next season.
