'I've been told': Journalist shares what type of player Chelsea are planning to sign this summer
Journalist Adam Newson has claimed on the ‘View from the Bridge’ podcast that Chelsea are looking to add leaders to their squad this season.
It has been a struggle to know who to turn to in key moments during what has been a turgid run of form at Stamford Bridge.
Other than the likes of Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta, no one particularly stands out as someone who can rally the troops in this difficult moment.
This comes after they made the decision to sell vice-captain Jorginho last month, as his contract began to wind down.
In fairness, the Italy international had no plans of staying after this season came to an end, and the offer from league leaders Arsenal made the decision easier for the Blues.
However, it has left a void quite obvious when Silva was forced off against Tottenham at the weekend. The captain’s armband was handed to Reece James.
Chelsea want to sign leaders
While the 23-year-old certainly possesses the potential to be one of the future leaders of the squad it’s fair to say he perhaps isn’t there yet.
This could explain why Newson has claimed that the Blues are going to be in the market for a player with leadership skills this summer.
He said: “I’ve been told Chelsea feel they need 1 or 2 more leaders and that’s something they will look at in the summer”
While it is currently unclear who they are looking for to fill this profile, it will likely come as a result of a number of academy prospects being sold.
Mason Mount, who himself had been tipped as a future Chelsea captain, is reportedly on the radar of the league’s biggest teams. Meanwhile, fellow midfielder Conor Gallagher is likely to be on the move at the end of the season.
