'Runs himself into the ground': Graham Potter claims 23-year-old Chelsea star works so hard in games

Graham Potter has hailed Chelsea’s Kai Havertz for his incredible work rate in games.

There is definitely a sizeable section of the Blues fanbase that is frustrated by Havertz, who has seven goals in 33 games across all competitions this season.

The left-footed attacker has been the frontline centre-forward since Potter took charge, but it’s a role that doesn’t really suit him.

However, the Germany international reminded everyone of his quality with an eye-catching performance this week. He was fantastic and scored in the Champions League victory against Borussia Dortmund.

Potter has given a fairly passionate defence of Havertz, whom he clearly massively rates.

In particular, he’s highlighted his commitment and energy as a huge positive in his game.

“I have no doubt about Kai. He’s a top player, delivers in the big moments, gives his best for the team all the time, and runs himself into the ground,” Potter said, as quoted by Football London.

“He probably benefited from playing a slightly different position [against Dortmund] but whenever you ask him to do he does his best. That’s a great starting point. He’s still young and he’s got all the attributes to be a top player, score goals, assists, help the team. He can be an all-around fantastic attacking player.”

Havertz recently ran more than any of his teammates in Chelsea’s win over Dortmund, so the statistics are definitely there to back up Potter’s point.

Hopefully, the belief shown from the manager is enough to keep driving Havertz forward.

If he can sharpen up in front of goal and around the box, he can be quite the player when you combine that with everything else.
