‘Still open’: Chelsea have made no progress with £40m player’s contract, he may be replaced – journalist
Journalist Ben Jacobs has told GiveMeSport that there has currently been no progress made over offering Mateo Kovacic a new contract at Chelsea.
The midfielder joined the club for around £40m after already spending a season on loan at Stamford Bridge.
However, many may have not believed based on his temporary spell just how important he would prove to be to the side.
Especially under former manager Thomas Tuchel, the Croatian showed he has the ability to run a midfield, often taking the place of a quality operator such as Jorginho or N’golo Kante.
Recent weeks have seen speculation begin to rise about his future, and if it does lie at his current side.
Kovacic is reportedly admired by Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola already publicly showing his affection for the player.
Kovacic talks not advancing
The midfield position at Chelsea is one which has undergone plenty of work in recent months, that isn’t showing signs of stopping anytime soon.
January saw them spend a club-record fee on Enzo Fernandez, and he looked close to his best in the new system deployed by Graham Potter against Leeds.
It is also now likely that Kante will sign a new deal to extend his stay in West London.
However, Jacobs has claimed there is a big chance the future of the position does not include Kovacic.
He said: “Talks haven’t really advanced. They’re not in any significant stage yet with Kovacic, so that situation is still quite open.
“There could be room for another midfielder to come in. In fact, there definitely will be. Chelsea will see that as a priority area.”
The current fitness situation means the Croatia international will surely feature for the Blues in tomorrow’s huge Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.
