‘Very close’: Thomas Tuchel almost took Premier League job before agreeing to become Bayern Munich manager
It has been claimed that former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was in advanced talks with Tottenham to become their new boss.
According to journalist Georg Holzner, discussions were ongoing before the opportunity to manage Bayern Munich came up for the 2021 Champions League winner.
The German has not returned to management yet since he was unceremoniously sacked by Todd Boehly and Chelsea earlier this season.
He was given just seven games under the new ownership before being given his marching orders, with the decision coming after a 1-0 defeat in the Champions League to Dinamo Zagreb.
The loss left them in a perilous position in their group, however four consecutive wins under his replacement, Graham Potter, saw them advance to the knockout stages of the competition.
While the Bayern job has obviously been attractive to Tuchel, it is reportedly not the first one he has given plenty of consideration to.
Tuchel spoke to Tottenham
Holzner has claimed that while Antonio Conte hasn’t yet been officially sacked by Spurs, Tuchel was approached and entered conversations over potentially taking over.
He said: “According to Kicker’s information, Thomas Tuchel should sign tomorrow or the day after. Tuchel was recently in very close talks with Tottenham, he could well imagine the project. But now Bavaria is acting.”
The situation at Spurs has been somewhat of a mess despite them still occupying a place in the top four of the Premier League.
A scathing review of the players from Conte after a recent draw to Southampton caused plenty of unrest, however if reports are to be believed they cannot say they weren’t warned.
It was claimed yesterday that Chelsea staff had informed them before hiring him that it was not going to be an easy venture, claiming it would be even more difficult than working with Jose Mourinho.
