‘Fantastic’: Frank Lampard hugely impressed by 22-year-old Chelsea player despite Real Madrid loss
Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard has praised the performance of Enzo Fernandez for Chelsea against Real Madrid last night.
He claimed in his post-match interview with the club that the Blues are in good hands in the midfield position for the future with the 22-year-old in their ranks.
The Blues fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the defending champions last night, with the majority of their second half being spent with their backs to the wall following Ben Chilwell’s red card.
The change in system the club had to make at this stage essentially killed off any attacking threat, and instead the players had to dig in to ensure the tie didn’t get away from them.
One of the standout performers across the 90 minutes was Fernandez. He was consistently spraying great balls to either wing in an attempt to get the Blues going in the first half.
He showed his defensive class in the second half too, despite his game being clearly limited by the sending off.
Lampard praised the club-record signing for his performance, claiming he has been impressed by him ever since he arrived at the club.
He said: “I think they are both fantastic players. We all know N’golo, to have him back is a big deal, but we also have to respect he was out for a long time and we can’t expect miracles from him every game, even though he’s produced them for us more than enough times.
“And Enzo I have been hugely impressed with since I came in because of quality and personality, without even speaking the language yet. I think in terms of the future and the midfield we are in good hands in that sense.”
With him starting every game since he joined in January, it may be recommended that he is rested for the Premier League game against Brighton before the crucial second leg against Madrid.
