Report: 23-year-old in contention to start for Chelsea tonight vs Real Madrid, he has only one CL start
Reports have claimed that Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is now in contention to start for the Blues against Real Madrid tonight.
According to the Evening Standard, the 23-year-old has played his way into Frank Lampard’s thoughts for a potential start in the Champions League tonight.
Gallagher’s deflected strike brought some much-needed, albeit short-lived, joy at Stamford Bridge when he opened the scoring against Brighton.
The Seagulls deservedly left West London with all three points, although the England international was given plenty of praise by the interim boss for his personal display.
The midfield battle against Madrid has proven to be huge in the last two instances these two teams met, and this year is looking set to be no different.
This is why supporters were delighted when N’golo Kante was deemed fit to return to the starting side against a team he has starred against in the past.
Gallagher in contention to start
Despite Enzo Fernandez and Mateo Kovacic chipping in with plenty of work themselves, the Blues were ultimately outclassed in the first leg.
They will need to overturn a two-goal deficit tonight to advance to the semi-finals, leaving Lampard with a number of big calls to make to make it happen.
This now reportedly could include whether to hand Gallagher just his second start in the Champions League tonight.
It is perhaps not recommended to break up the trio who started against Madrid in the first leg, however instead look to alter the composition of the attack if changes are to be made.
Starting a front two of Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling was largely ineffective at the Bernabeu, and instead someone like Mykhailo Mudryk should be considered to target the weaker areas of the opponents in the wide defensive zones.
