Report: Julian Nagelsmann thought Chelsea would give manager with zero trophies the job instead of him
Reports have claimed that Julian Nagelsmann had fears that Chelsea were going to give the manager’s job to Vincent Kompany instead of him.
According to the Daily Mail, the emergence of candidates such as the Belgian and Mauricio Pochettino worried the former Bayern Munich man to a point where he didn’t want to be in the running any longer.
It was no doubt a big blow to the Blues when news emerged that Nagelsmann had ruled himself out of the race to become the next permanent manager at Stamford Bridge.
The German had for a long time been seen as the number one target for most by the board, despite them consistently insisting there was no outright leader in the race for the job.
After reports emerged that Luis Enrique was out of the running, it looked set to be Nagelsmann’s job to lose.
Nagelsmann feared not getting Chelsea job
However, a reported list of candidates that involved Kompany and Pochettino emerged, which seemingly spooked the former Bayern man who assumed he had the job sewed up.
While Kompany is surely going to eventually secure his first trophy in management with Burnley in the Championship, he is still yet to secure his first honour in charge of a club.
Despite the reported interest in the former Manchester City defender, it appears Pochettino has made himself the favourite for the job.
Despite his links to city rivals Tottenham, the board at Stamford Bridge appear to have been impressed enough in initial talks to potentially give him the opportunity to return to management for the first time since being sacked by PSG.
With things not going to plan under temporary boss Frank Lampard, getting everyone onside behind a new boss in plenty of time for next year is a recommended way to go from now.
