‘Watch him’: Frank Lampard says he tells players to watch 28-year-old Chelsea man to improve them
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has admitted that he has told former players to watch Raheem Sterling play in order to improve them.
He told Football London that he has frequently referenced the 28-year-old when looking to coach young wingers in his previous jobs.
Sterling started Lampard’s first game of his second spell in charge of the club against Wolves on Saturday, however the game piled more misery on the Blues and their supporters.
They were defeated 1-0 at Molineux, remaining in the bottom half of the Premier League as a result.
The England international had a particularly rough time in the Midlands in what was his first start since the Champions League Round of 16 tie with Borussia Dortmund.
Injuries have plagued the winger’s 2023 so far, with setbacks limiting his time on the pitch in recent weeks.
Lampard praises Sterling
Despite what has been an all-round negative season for Sterling, Lampard has remained full of praise for him and what he does as a winger.
He said: “I think he’s a fantastic player. He’s been one of the best wingers in the world for a long time, at times, maybe in some people’s opinion, the best.
“Can’t remember how many times I’ve referenced to young wingers when I was here previously at Chelsea, at Derby and Everton actually – watch Raheem Sterling and see why he scores 20 goals a season plus.”
It is likely that the Englishman will play a big part in the Champions League in the coming weeks, the only games that particularly matter for the Blues for the rest of the season.
The temporary manager will be particularly keen on seeing his big-game experience coming through in a squad that will acknowledge the importance of their third consecutive tie with Real Madrid.
