"Decision has been made": Fabrizio Romano shares update on £50m man for Chelsea fans

Fabrizio Romano has now shared an update on Raheem Sterling for Chelsea fans to digest.

Many supporters have been left confused after the £50m man was dropped from the England squad by Gareth Southgate ahead of the upcoming UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

Now – thanks to Fabrizio Romano – Chelsea fans have been given some clarity on the situation involving Raheem Sterling.

What’s the story?

Well, many will argue that the 28-year-old didn’t make the England squad due to the fact he only has six goals in 27 Premier League appearances this season.

However, Sterling is a favourite under Southgate, and as seen through Harry Maguire’s continued involvement with the Three Lions, club form doesn’t seem to affect everyone when it comes to international call-ups.

In regards to Sterling, Romano explains that the Chelsea No.17 and Southgate came to a “mutual decision” for him to sit out the clashes against Malta and North Macedonia so he can focus on “recuperating his body” ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

In full, the reliable Italian journalist wrote on Twitter: “Following conversation between coach and player, a mutual decision has been made for Raheem Sterling to sit out the upcoming internationals.

“Sterling will focusing on recuperating his body in preparation for the upcoming season. Raheem, still very much a part of Gareth’s plans.”

2023/24 campaign is huge for Raheem Sterling

If Sterling doesn’t kick on under Mauricio Pochettino next season, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Southgate overlook him more often given the level of talent coming through in his position.

In the wide attacking areas, the Kingston-born forward is competing with the likes of Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish for a place in Southgate’s starting XI, all of whom are doing well at club level.

As time goes on, the competition could grow with attackers such as Harvey Barnes delivering on a regular basis for Leicester, so it is important for Sterling to return to his best next season.

If he struggles to do so, then his time in Southgate’s starting XI may be over.
