Report: Chelsea looking to sign 38m defender this summer they had a bid rejected for him in January

Reports have claimed that Chelsea are still interested in signing Lyon centre-back Castello Lukeba this summer.

According to But! Football, the Blues are one of the Premier League clubs interested in bringing the youngster in during this transfer window.

It has been claimed that Chelsea made a large effort to sign Lukeba back in January, with it being reported that they had a bid of around £38m rejected for him.

Instead, the Blues left the transfer window with the signing of Benoit Badiashile from Monaco. He has impressed in the bizarrely few opportunities he has been given since joining.

It has perhaps been down to the fact that he was not included in the squad for the Champions League knockout stages, and managers Graham Potter and Frank Lampard knew that would be their only chance at silverware.

Lukeba still considered

Despite his addition, it appears interest in Lukeba has not ceased.

The 20-year-old has continued to develop well at Lyon, making 34 appearances in Ligue 1 throughout the 2022/23 campaign, with his superb displays keeping Chelsea interested.

Many supporters of the club will be curious as to why there is still interest in signing centre-backs when looking at the current crop at Stamford Bridge.

The club will also need to be careful in order to not alienate the feelings of Levi Colwill, who has the potential to be one of the best centre-backs in the world in just a few years’ time.

There is still uncertainty though over whether he will commit his future to the club, with him looking for first team minutes as early as next season.

With his international future perhaps on the line too, it will be a very important campaign for Colwill.
