'I met him': Pep Guardiola shares how he really feels about Todd Boehly and Chelsea's spending

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he has admiration for Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly.

Todd Boehly and Chelsea have been in the headlines once again this summer after splashing out in the transfer window, and while Guardiola thinks his side would be criticised if they spent the same amount of money that their Premier League rivals have, he has no issues with what is going on at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to The Guardian and other outlets, the City boss said: I don’t criticise Chelsea for one second. I’m saying, if we do it, we are dead. All around the world [every club] can do whatever they want. I have admiration for Todd — I met him. They can do whatever they want.

“If they want to spend, I don’t know, £900m since he arrived, 900 more, 900 more — they have it. The business is the business. They sell a lot this season so they can do it.”

Chelsea’s spending spree so far this summer has seen them bring in the likes of Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Robert Sanchez.

Chelsea’s spending spree necessary

In the current transfer window, there has been a need for Chelsea to go out and sign players. As Guardiola mentioned, they have sold a lot of their assets over the last couple of months.

For example, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all been moved on, while N’Golo Kante was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge on a free. It is why the Blues went after Caicedo and Lavia.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has also left the club on loan, so the decision to bring Sanchez in from Brighton & Hove Albion is starting to look even smarter.

It would be interesting to see, though, if Guardiola still felt the same way if Chelsea pipped his side to the Premier League title or beat them in another Champions League final.

After coming 12th place last season, Mauricio Pochettino’s team do not really look like a threat to City right now, so it is obviously easy for their manager not to be concerned by the Blues’ spending.
