Report: The reason why Brighton have been reluctant to sell Moises Caicedo to Chelsea

Brighton & Hove Albion are reluctant to let Moises Caicedo join Chelsea after the Blues refused to sell Levi Colwill to them earlier in the transfer window.

That is according to a report from the Daily Mail.

It states that Chelsea’s decision not to allow Levi Colwill to return to the Amex Stadium has resulted in Brighton not wanting to sell Moises Caicedo to them.

Colwill spent last season on loan at the Seagulls and was a player they wanted to keep hold of after making a bid for him.

However, according to Sky Sports, Chelsea rejected their proposal to sign the central defender permanently, which was thought to be worth £30m.

Not a valid reason

Chelsea’s refusal to sanction the sale of Colwill this summer should not prevent Caicedo from getting his dream move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues let Brighton have the 20-year-old for the 2022/23 campaign when they could have easily allowed him to join another club on loan. Given his talent, there surely would have been other sides who would have been interested in his services for the season.

Since then, the Seagulls have also sold Robert Sanchez to their Premier League rivals. If they were that annoyed with how the whole Colwill saga played out, then why was there not a reluctance to sell the goalkeeper to Chelsea?

Perhaps because the Spaniard had lost his starting spot at the Amex. But if relations were still good enough for a deal to be done, then it should be the same for Caicedo.

At the end of the day, Brighton are obviously entitled to do what they want with their asset, the same as Chelsea with Colwill. But trying to prevent Caicedo from joining the Blues because they did not sell the England U21 international to them is a bit of a petty reason.
