'Football IQ': Manager amazed by 20-year-old Chelsea loanee he's playing in a new position

Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton has raved about the quality of Chelsea youngster loanee Harvey Vale.

Harvey Vale, who’s just 20, was sent by Chelsea on a season-long loan to League One club Bristol Rovers this year.

The left-footed talent is a highly rated star to come through the Blues academy at Cobham. It’s resulted in him playing five first-team games for Chelsea, too.

He’s recognised as a creative playmaker that can play anywhere across the forward positions, including on the wings or centrally. Now, he’s impressing in a new position as Bristol Rovers’ main left-back.

Barton has given huge praise to Vale for the way he’s performed in his side, especially in the left-back position. It’s quite the statement that he’s even compared the Chelsea loanee to legendary figure Ashley Cole, the best left-back to ever grace the Premier League.

“The two games he’s played in there from the start I think he’s looked like a young Ashley Cole, he looks like he’s played there forever,” Barton said, as quoted by Bristol World.

“He’s a footballer who is high on football IQ, he’s got a great passing range, he can run, decent in the air.”

We’ve got to remember Vale’s performing in England’s third division this campaign before getting too carried away, but the signs are very positive when it comes to his development.

He received big praise earlier in the season from local media for one specific Bristol Rovers performance.

We’ll certainly keep a close eye on Vale, who’s one of several Blues youngsters doing the business out on loan. You can throw the likes of Omari Hutchinson and Angelo Gabriel into that category, too.
