‘He couldn’t play’: International manager confirms Chelsea man turned up to international duty already injured

Albania manager Sylvinho has confirmed that Chelsea striker Armando Broja turned up to international duty already injured.

He told FCInterNews that the youngster was still feeling the effects of his long-term injury when it came round to representing his country.

News emerged last week that Broja was returning to Stamford Bridge early after not being able to compete in European Championship qualifiers.

This is despite him now making two appearances for Chelsea since his serious knee problem, starting against Fulham and Burnley.

However, Sylvinho’s comments have suggested that he may be set for another period on the sidelines.

He said: “What happened to Armando Broja is very simple, it arose from a serious injury, he had to stay off the pitch for nine month.

“He came back a few weeks ago, he played a few minutes in the first match, the same in the second. Then, one match before coming to us, he played 45 minutes and was replaced due to some physical problems.

“Normally he had a check-up at Chelsea before coming to us, the checks had gone well. When he came here, he trained, but he still had a bit of concern: we sat down and spoke to the doctor, and we were in constant contact with Chelsea to find out about his injury.

“It was clear that he couldn’t play and together with the club and the player we agreed that he would return to Chelsea and begin his recovery. That’s the whole story.”

This makes it likely that Nicolas Jackson will return to the starting side on Saturday when Arsenal visit Stamford Bridge.

He himself missed the international break due to a wrist injury, although should be fit for the weekend’s return to the Premier League.
