‘Needs to perform’: Pochettino says £50m Chelsea player had to prove people wrong yesterday vs Burnley
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino says Raheem Sterling had a point to prove in the Blues’ 4-1 win against Burnley yesterday.
Raheem Sterling was once again left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad, but that setback did not stop him from delivering at Turf Moor, and Mauricio Pochettino thinks he needed to put in a good performance after being snubbed by his national team boss.
The winger was involved in three of the four goals Chelsea scored on the day, grabbing one for himself, and his manager urged him to continue proving people wrong when speaking to football.london and other outlets after the game.
While Sterling will be disappointed to miss another set of England fixtures, he will at least be fresh and ready for his side’s huge match against Arsenal after the international break.
Mauricio Pochettino urges Raheem Sterling to prove Gareth Southgate wrong
Pochettino has told Sterling to keep showing Southgate that he has made a mistake by overlooking him for the England squad.
After the 28-year-old’s excellent display versus Burnley, the Argentine said: “I think a player with his experience knows he needs to perform and to show the manager of the national team he was wrong in the decision.
“Only with performance and scoring goals is he going to show that he deserves to go, nothing in between. When you are not involved with the squad like he was, it’s about to show that you deserve. With performance is the only way to show that.”
Raheem Sterling can win England recall
Sterling is not even in his 30s yet, so it is not like he is coming to the end of his career.
The former Manchester City star, who cost Chelsea £50m, can easily win his place back in the England squad. He just needs to maintain the level he played at against Vincent Kompany’s men.
Do that, and Sterling should earn a Three Lions recall at some stage. Ultimately, we do not think Southgate will overlook him forever.
