Frank Lampard now shares if he could have been given the Chelsea manager’s job this summer

Frank Lampard has now claimed it was unlikely in his head he was ever going to be handed the permanent manager’s job at Chelsea.

He told the ‘Obi One Podcast’ that he believes the club are now going in the right direction with a new message installed by the current boss.

Lampard was brought in to try and steady the ship last season off the back of Graham Potter’s unsuccessful spell.

This did not go to plan. The Blues only won one game during his second spell in charge of the club.

This included an exit from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid.

Lampard has now claimed that in his head, he never really stood a chance at getting the role long-term.

Lampard on the permanent Chelsea job

He said: “It wasn’t as clean cut as any of those. I never expected having left Everton to then come in and them go ‘yeah if you win the next 5/6 games you can be the next Chelsea manager.’ I didn’t expect that and they didn’t say that.

“It was almost let’s look at this period and see what we can do with it. It was never a ‘if you do this you’ll stay at the club.’ So in my head the period was what it was, and it turned out to be the case.

“I think I’ve had my time there, at Chelsea. I think it’s good that they’re getting a fresh message in pre-season, I think that’s a good thing for the club.”

Chelsea are showing signs of going in the right direction under Mauricio Pochettino, culminating in last night’s result.

They beat Tottenham 4-1 away from home, with Spurs unbeaten in the Premier League until last night.
