'My favourite': Eidur Gudjohnsen now names his number one teammate in all his time at Chelsea

Eidur Gudjohnsen has named Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink as his favourite teammate from his spell at Chelsea.

The Blues have had their fair share of difficulty with strikers in recent decades, but they had a couple of fantastic ones at the turn of century. You can add Didier Drogba and Diego Costa to major successes that followed as well.

Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink both moved to Stamford Bridge in 2000.

Hasselbaink scored 87 goals in 177 games for the club during a four-year spell. Meanwhile, Gudjohnsen netted 78 times in 263 Blues appearances across six years.

Eidur Gudjohnsen names favourite teammate

Gudjohnsen has hailed the strike partnership he had with Hasselbaink as his favourite.

“For the connection it’s Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, my favourite to play with. We clicked as a person as soon as we met. There was just something there,” Gudjohnsen told Sky Sports.

“We signed the same week. We went to training in the same car. Jimmy with his power and ferocious finishing, sometimes ferocious character. I think I was the calmer one of the two. It’s not something you have to study or particularly work on, it was just there.”

Incidentally, Gudjohnsen said in the same interview that Frank Lampard is the best player he played with at Chelsea.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is underrated

Chelsea fans of a certain age will remember Hasselbaink flying at the club before his exit when Jose Mourinho arrived.

The Dutch striker, who benefited a lot playing with the more creative Gudjohnsen, was a natural goalscorer.

He’s part of the Premier League’s 100 goal club, finishing his time in England with 129 top-flight goals. On top of Chelsea’s success, he also played for Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Charlton Athletic.
