Report: Insiders within the game now doubt 26-year-old Chelsea player can reach world-class level
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez does not seem to have convinced everyone in the game.
According to TEAMtalk, some insiders within football have doubts that he can become a world-class No.1.
Chelsea signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion during the summer but are now being linked with a move for AC Milan shot-stopper Mike Maignan.
There has also been plenty of talk about the club being interested in Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, so Sanchez’s place between the sticks may not be completely safe despite him having only just joined the club.
Ramsdale could be forced to leave the Emirates after losing his spot in the team to Sanchez’s compatriot David Raya.
Can Robert Sanchez become a world-class goalkeeper?
Sanchez has proven to be a good Premier League goalkeeper. Even during his short time at Chelsea so far, he has impressed at times despite the club’s constant links to new shot-stoppers.
It was only in September when the Spaniard won Castrol Save of the Month for a fantastic stop against Aston Villa.
However, watching Sanchez, he does not really have a standout attribute yet, like Alisson and Ederson’s distribution or Thibaut Courtois’ ability to claim crosses and corners so easily.
All in all, he may struggle to reach that world-class level like the trio, but that does not mean he cannot be Chelsea’s No.1. At the end of the day, he is still a very good goalkeeper, good enough to help the team qualify for the Champions League.
If the club want to start competing for the title again, then they may have to upgrade on the former Brighton man. But they are nowhere close to being in that position, so it is not something that they need to worry about for the time being.
Chelsea just need to concentrate on getting back into the top four and Sanchez should be a safe pair of hands for that. It is other areas in Mauricio Pochettino‘s squad that is costing them in their pursuit of European football.
