'Something changed': Gary Lineker shares what his relationship with Jose Mourinho is really like now

Gary Lineker has now shared what his relationship is like with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho right now.

He told ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast that the Blues legend has gone cold on the pundit and former player, after being a big fan during his spell in England.

Mourinho is currently in charge of Roma over in Serie A, where he is getting the best out of Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku.

His persona has often made him a marmite-like character, with the Stamford Bridge faithful adoring him despite him managing two of their biggest rivals in England.

Lineker has claimed that he has had plenty of interactions in the past with Mourinho, however their relationship has deteriorated over time for an unknown reason.

He said: “I used to have an amazing relationship with Jose. I did a documentary with him. He used to text me all the time. He would text me after Match of the Day saying ‘you guys understand it, it’s great’. And we had been going along like that for two years then something changed.

“I was asked to present him with the man of the year awards at the GQ awards, they asked me to present him with the trophy.

“I said yeah I’ll do that for Jose, of course. So then about four days before the event they told me Jose has got in touch with us and he doesn’t want you to present the trophy to him. He wants someone who is not in football. I thought that’s a bit odd but I’ll go to the event anyway.

“I went up to Jose and he kind of blanked me. I went up to him and I went are we okay and he said ‘oh yeah, yeah, yeah’. And he wasn’t okay. He hasn’t been okay since. And I have no idea what it was. I don’t know if I said something on Match of the Day, I have genuinely no idea and I have interviewed him subsequently and he was very cold.

“I even went to a Champions League game which they didn’t do well in and was having a drink with Ed Woodward, and Jose came up. And he sent a text to Ed Woodward saying why are you talking to him.”

Mourinho’s links to Chelsea refuse to go away, and even managerial vacancies at Stamford Bridge see his name brought up from time to time.

However, that scenario is likely not to play out despite two significantly brilliant spells in West London.
