'Was he really fully committed?': Steve Sidwell suggests 22-year-old Chelsea player just showed a lack of effort
Steve Sidwell has criticised Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo for one poor moment in his latest display.
The Blues will still be frustrated after Tuesday night’s 1-0 away loss at Middlesbrough in a Carabao Cup semi-final first leg. Mauricio Pochettino’s side will now need to come from behind after a really poor team performance at the Riverside Stadium.
Moises Caicedo, 22, did come under-fire for his role in the goal conceded by Chelsea. The Blues midfielder failed to track goalscorer Hayden Hackney into the penalty box.
Speaking via talkSPORT this week, Andy Jacobs ripped into Caicedo for not tracking his runner when Boro scored.

Similarly, Sky Sports pundit Steve Sidwell suggested there was a lack of effort from Caicedo in the decisive moment versus Boro.
“It looked like a few Chelsea players turned up and thought we’re going to win this game. They weren’t prepared to do the hard yards. You look at the goal, Caicedo running back, was he really fully committed to make that recovery run? There was so much of that going on,” Sidwell told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (7:15pm, 10 January).
Moises Caicedo against Middlesbrough
We agree that Caicedo switched off at the worst time against Boro, albeit the defending from Levi Colwill in the build-up was just as poor.
Despite the lapse in concentration, we feel like Caicedo was actually one of Chelsea’s strongest performers this week. There’s signs that the South American star is growing in influence on this team, too.
There has to be question marks about the Blues midfield right now with the current make-up of Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher. Our feeling is that one of them may need to be dropped to find the best balance on the pitch.
For us, Caicedo’s got to be in the starting XI for the foreseeable future as he tries to rediscover the levels he showed at Brighton last year.
It’ll be interesting to see what Pochettino does this weekend for the league fixture at home to Fulham.
