'Absolutely no chance': ESPN pundit now claims Chelsea won't sign £85m midfielder despite rumours
Chelsea have recently been linked with a move for one Barcelona player.
Chelsea are willing to make a bid for Frenkie de Jong and are ready to pay around €100m (£85m) to land the midfielder, according to Sport.
For Steve Nicol, though, there is no chance of the Blues signing De Jong in the summer. The Liverpool legend was asked about the 26-year-old potentially moving to Stamford Bridge on ESPN FC.
Chelsea already revamped their midfield last year. In the 2023 summer transfer window, they signed Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to bolster their options in the middle of the park.
In the winter window, they bought Enzo Fernandez from Benfica after his exploits at the World Cup in Qatar.
Steve Nicol cannot see Frenkie de Jong joining Chelsea
If De Jong is to join anyone in the summer, Nicol thinks it will be Manchester United, not Chelsea.
Discussing whether the Dutchman could end up at Stamford Bridge, the former Liverpool defender said: “No. No, no chance. Absolutely no chance, seems more like a Man United buy. Well, the manager’s Dutch for a start.”

Manchester United more likely to sign Frenkie de Jong than Chelsea
Nicol has already highlighted the Dutch link between De Jong and Erik ten Hag, while the two obviously know each other from Ajax.
Chelsea have already spent big on two midfielders as well in Caicedo and Fernandez. Lavia was not cheap either, so you can also add him to the mix.
According to BBC Sport, the total package it took for the Blues to sign the 20-year-old was worth £58m.
Are they now going to go drop £85m on another midfielder? It seems unlikely, though you cannot rule anything out under this new ownership.
If you had to guess where De Jong is likely to end up, however, most would probably say United.
