Gary Neville left really impressed by £30m Chelsea player in tonight's win over Crystal Palace

Chelsea did not put in their best performance in the first half of their game against Crystal Palace.

It was not Malo Gusto‘s worst display, though, with Gary Neville feeling that he was Chelsea‘s best player in the first 45 minutes while also being effective in the second half.

The Manchester United legend was commentating on the game for Sky Sports (12/02/2024 at 21:17).

Despite Chelsea dominating the first half, it was Palace who took the lead after Jefferson Lerma’s incredible strike.

However, it was cancelled out right after the restart when Conor Gallagher converted Gusto’s cross into the back of Dean Henderson’s net.

Malo Gusto Chelsea’s best player against Crystal Palace in first half

Neville really liked what he saw from Gusto at Selhurst Park.

On the right-back, the former England defender said: “I thought Gusto was Chelsea’s best player in the first half by a mile. He’s started the second half really well.”

Malo Gusto dominated right flank at Selhurst Park

When Reece James got injured before Gusto’s arrival at Chelsea, it was a nightmare. It still is, as the 24-year-old is obviously an incredible full-back.

However, Gusto, who joined Chelsea from Lyon in a £30.7m deal (BBC Sport), has really filled in well for his captain.

Going forward, the 20-year-old is a real threat, with his crossing proving to be quite a weapon for Mauricio Pochettino‘s side. Again, it was his ball into the box the helped Chelsea to draw level.

Defensively, Gusto can definitely improve. The France international has given away a couple of penalties this season and also been sent off. But at his young age, it is to be expected.

In an ideal world, James stays fit and Gusto rotates with him and comes in for the cup games. You obviously want a player of the England international’s quality starting every week, not to mention he is also Chelsea skipper.

However, with the way Gusto has been playing lately, we think Chelsea supporters will be breathing a little bit easier whenever James is unavailable. The former Lyon man has undoubtedly been one of the club’s better signings under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
