Report: Chelsea had two reasons for deciding that they didn't want to appoint Roberto De Zerbi

While Enzo Maresca looks set to become the new Chelsea boss, the club did reportedly consider Roberto De Zerbi.

However, it appears that Chelsea had a couple of concerns about the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager before eventually shortlisting him.

Whatever the case, Roberto De Zerbi is now expected to miss out on the Chelsea job to Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca.

On Monday, it emerged that Chelsea had made the 44-year-old their No.1 target to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine departed Stamford Bridge by mutual consent last Tuesday.

Chelsea’s reservations about Roberto De Zerbi

According to the i, Chelsea have considered De Zerbi alongside Maresca and Brentford’s Thomas Frank.

However, it looks like they saw some red flags before adding him to their shortlist.

The same outlet claims that the Blues had a couple of early reservations about De Zerbi and that he was not initially part of their recruitment process.

One concern was whether the Italian would bring the right footballing identity to the club.

The other was some of his demands, such as the number of coaches he wanted to bring to Stamford Bridge with him.

Where could Roberto De Zerbi end up now?

It does not look like De Zerbi will be heading to Chelsea, but the 44-year-old could still end up remaining in England.

As per The Guardian, Manchester United have contacted De Zerbi about replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

United won the FA Cup over the weekend, but the Red Devils had a miserable Premier League campaign after finishing in eighth, leaving Ten Hag’s future in doubt.

If De Zerbi ends up at United and succeeds there, while Maresca goes to Chelsea and fails, a lot of Blues supporters are not going to be happy.

Ultimately, the Chelsea board really need this Maresca appointment, which now looks like an inevitability, to work out after the failures of Pochettino and Graham Potter.
