‘The real difference’: Gianluigi Buffon shares what he noticed early about future Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca

Italian football legend Gianluigi Buffon has had some comments resurface about what he instantly noticed about Chelsea’s likely new manager.

It is widely expected that it is a matter of hours until the Blues announce Enzo Maresca as their new boss after sacking Mauricio Pochettino.

The Italian seemed to impress greatly in the interview process based on the knowledge he has of the current first team squad as well as the youngsters on loan.

One player in particular he has a plan for is Enzo Fernandez, which will no doubt be key due to the collective opinion that we are yet to see the best of the World Cup winner up to now.

Maresca does come with a feeling of unknown though. Other than his one season at Leicester City, his career is not well documented in England.

He had a short stint in charge of Parma, where he brought in Buffon as one of his first signings.

Buffon praises Maresca

Despite the fact the goalkeeper has played under some of the best managers in the game, he was full of praise for what he instantly noticed from Maresca.

He said back in 2021, according to Leicestershire Live: “The real difference though is how you manage to convey those ideas and get the team to take them on board. It seems to me that Maresca has something different that immediately gets into the players’ heads and that’s decisive.”

“The first impressions are very good and convincing, I think every coach always tries to bring his own ideas, which often are different from the orthodoxy.

Maresca needs new signings

It remains to be seen what kind of impact Maresca can have in his first season as a Premier League season, where he will be pressured to build on the work of Pochettino in qualifying for Europe.

It does feel as if new signings will be required to back him, and reports have already stated as many as four or five are expected to boost his prospects.
