'Amazing' Chelsea player explains why he is perfect for Enzo Maresca's system

Chelsea’s ongoing pre-season campaign is beginning to prove to Enzo Maresca which players are best suited to the system he is looking to play.

A number of first team players have seen themselves feature in brand new positions under the new manager.

Reece James has been inverting into midfield in the opening two friendlies, with him saying he has enjoyed the challenge that comes with the new role.

Maresca’s system seems to revolve around one defensive midfielder being helped out by the inverted full-back, with two midfielders operating as traditional ‘Number 8s’ to help the attack.

When he was at Leicester last season, the Italian called upon Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to occupy one of those positions, and he had easily his best campaign of his career.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall says he knows what it takes to play under Maresca

The midfielder was described as ‘amazing’ last season, and he has now told TalkSPORT that he feels he knows exactly what it takes to star in his system.

He said: “I think he just wants a player that just knows the role well, knows what positions to pick up in possession and someone that can contribute in terms of goals and assists.

“That’s a big part of his No.8. He wants them to be involved in the attacking play, getting in the box and just knowing the role and knowing the positions and also out of possession pressing. He wants you to be aggressive and press high.

“So I think if you have all of them fundamentals, you’re a good candidate for the role.”

Conor Gallagher expected to leave

There is plenty of competition for places in midfield at Stamford Bridge next season, however one candidate could soon be on the move away.

Atletico Madrid are reportedly close to an agreement over signing Conor Gallagher, with the England international entering the final year of his contract.

It remains to be seen if personal terms will be agreed though, and although talk of a new contract has been on the agenda this summer, the expectation does feel as if he will be on the move this summer.
