How Gareth Southgate has described Cole Palmer after his penalty against Switzerland

England manager Gareth Southgate has been speaking about Chelsea star Cole Palmer following the Three Lions’ win against Switzerland on Saturday.

Cole Palmer played a part in England reaching the Euro 2024 semi-finals after scoring in their penalty shoot-out versus Switzerland.

The attacker is yet to start a game in Germany but has made three substitute appearances after Saturday’s match.

Next up for England is a more tricky fixture against the Netherlands in the last four.

Win that, and it will be back-to-back finals in the European Championship for Southgate’s men.

Gareth Southgate on Cole Palmer after Switzerland penalty

Palmer is still only 22 and this is his first international tournament.

However, that did not stop the Chelsea man from going up first in the penalty shoot-out with Switzerland.

He was able to get England off to a good start, dispatching his spot-kick after sending Yann Sommer the wrong way.

Southgate has since described Palmer as “fearless”.

Speaking about the former Manchester City player after the game, Southgate said: “Cole, he’s like an old man isn’t he? Fearless!”

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has justified Gareth Southgate’s decision to take him to Euro 2024

Palmer had an incredible campaign last season. In 45 games for Chelsea, he scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists.

Palmer has not been in the England set-up for long, though. While it would have been a controversial decision after what he has just achieved at Chelsea, Southgate could have perhaps argued that Euro 2024 has come a bit too soon for him.

In the end, though, he took him to the tournament and has now had that decision justified after Palmer’s role in the Three Lions’ quarter-final triumph.

Palmer will now be desperate to start in the semi-finals, though that is highly unlikely to happen.

He is competing against Bukayo Saka for a spot in the team, and the Arsenal man was arguably England’s best player against Switzerland, scoring their only goal of the game before penalties.
