'He'll have a terrific season': Ally McCoist thinks £45m player is going to be so good for Chelsea

Chelsea did not have the best season last term, but they still had some quality players who managed to perform, including the likes of Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Since then, Chelsea have added to their squad, recently completing the signing of Pedro Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers, for example.

Christopher Nkunku is also fit again, so that will be another boost to the team. Chelsea have really tried to protect Nkunku after the forward missed the majority of the previous campaign because of injury.

Together with Neto and Palmer, the Blues could have a really dangerous attack this season.

Ally McCoist confident Cole Palmer will pick up from where he left off at Chelsea

Palmer was undoubtedly Chelsea’s best attacker last term. In 45 appearances, he scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists.

Ally McCoist has now backed the 22-year-old to have another amazing season under Enzo Maresca.

Discussing Palmer on talkSPORT, the Rangers legend said: “Without doubt, in my opinion, should have played more, should have saw more of him in the Euros as well because he was terrific in the Euros. But what a season and a season probably more doom and gloom than anything else for Chelsea.

“What a shining light he was, what a bright star! Just come in, took responsibility, was taking really important penalties, made his mark, became effectively the main man in that team.

“You can argue he might have been the player of the year. I bet he was a lot of people’s player of the season last year and it’s another big season for him. I don’t disagree; I think he’ll have a terrific season.”

Palmer has signed a new contract at Chelsea, which is thoroughly deserved after what he managed to achieve during his first year at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer contract

Palmer’s new contract will see him remain a Chelsea player until at least 2033, which will delight supporters.

Not only has the £45m Englishman received an extension, though, he has also been handed a nice pay rise.

According to The Telegraph, Palmer’s wages have now gone up from £80,000-a-week to £120,000-a-week.

The same outlet claims that Nicolas Jackson could be the next Chelsea player in line for a contract extension.

His first season in west London did not go too badly either. While the Senegal international did miss a lot of chances, he was still able to score 17 goals in 44 appearances. It is not the worst record for a striker who was 22 at the time.

If he can go up a level while Palmer replicates his form from last season, then Chelsea should find themselves competing for a place in the top four.
