'We have to': Malo Gusto names the objective Chelsea simply must achieve next season
Chelsea’s Malo Gusto has been discussing what lies in store for the upcoming 2024/25 season and shared there’s a team objective they must achieve.
While last season at Stamford Bridge certainly had its difficult spells, Malo Gusto was one of the biggest positives. The young right-back had a superb debut campaign in Chelsea colours and made the move from Lyon to the Premier League look pretty effortless.
At the age of 21, he’s an aggressive defender who’s strong both going forward and with his back to goal. He was signed as the understudy to Blues captain Reece James, but ended up playing 37 games across all competitions last season during an impressive year.
Gusto thrived in a new position in pre-season earlier this week, starting at left-back against Club America and inverting into midfield to great effect. It was useful evidence for head coach Enzo Maresca to see that there’s a way to fit both him and James in the same starting XI.

Malo Gusto demands Chelsea win a trophy
Chelsea fans are surely going to love the latest comments from Gusto insisting that the team go into next season simply needing to win a trophy.
It’s been the norm for the Blues to win silverware every year during so much of the 21st century, but it’s back-to-back seasons without any trophy. Hopefully, Maresca’s arrival can help end the mini purple patch.
When discussing the Conference League, Gusto told The Athletic: “It is better than nothing but we have to take it step by step. We are young. The Conference League can be nice for us to know how (playing for a) European cup is. Then it is going to be nice because we have a good group with a lot of players and more matches this season. It is going to be nice to build something and put Chelsea where we have to be.
“Is this a chance to make good memories? Of course. We have to win something this season, it is very important. That is the objective. The Conference League, even the Premier League, or the cups. It is important to win trophies. To become better, it is important to the group.”
Chelsea can complete the European set
The Conference League isn’t the European tournament that Chelsea hoped to compete in next season, but it’s where they’ve ended up after sixth in the Premier League last term.
They’ve still got to qualify through a two-legged play-off tie later in August, with the draw taking place on Monday, but after that it’s the main stage of the competition. If Chelsea are in it, surely they’ll be ranked among the favourites.
Chelsea have won the Champions League (twice) and Europa League (twice) this century, so now they could become the first club to ever win all three major European competitions.
