BBC pundit picks which player he would drop from England's starting XI - Cole Palmer or Phil Foden
There’s a real headache with England’s national team when it comes to fitting all their talented players into the same starting line-up. In particular, fans up and down the country have questioned if Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham can all squeeze in the XI.
From a Chelsea perspective, Cole Palmer should be selected in any side he’s available for. His case may be supported by the fact that Palmer was recently crowned England’s Player of the Year.
However, the Blues attacking midfielder has international teammates Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham as stiff competition, who similarly thrive in a central No 10 position.
Lee Carsley, the interim England manager, took a risk in Thursday night’s 2-1 Nations League defeat to Greece by squeezing the aforementioned trio into the same team. Unfortunately, his gamble didn’t pay off and the Three Lions were poor at Wembley Stadium.
The experiment of Palmer, Foden and Bellingham together in a fluid system largely struggled, but we understand the test with Harry Kane absent earlier in the week through injury.

Cole Palmer over Phil Foden
BBC pundit Glenn Murray has explained that he’d choose to drop Foden rather than Palmer from the England XI.
When asked with England star misses out when Kane returns from injury, Murray picked Foden to drop out of the starting line-up.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport: “I just feel as though he (Foden) plays under such a strong system at City. Cole Palmer grew up in that as well, but he’s gone out to Chelsea now and he knows a different way.
“You could argue Cole Palmer [should be dropped by England], but I just think he’s been exceptional for 12 months in the Premier League. Let’s make no bones about it, he missed a couple of opportunities the other night [against Greece]. If he puts those away, and he has done like I say in a Chelsea shirt over and over again, we’re not even talking about this.
“I would agree with Phil Foden. It doesn’t seem to quite be clicking with him for England.”
Forgotten Chelsea player can break back into England contention
There’s currently three players from the Chelsea squad on England duty during this October international break. Palmer is joined by club teammates Levi Colwill and Noni Madueke in the Three Lions camp.
However, we think another Blues man could soon join them if things go his way.
Jadon Sancho, 24, is currently on a season-long loan with Chelsea that includes an obligation to buy. So far, he’s started excellently at Stamford Bridge with three assists in his opening four appearances this season.
The left-winger has 23 senior England caps to his name, but the most recent one was back in October 2021.
If Sancho can build on a positive start at Chelsea to really rediscover his best form, we think he could be back representing his country very soon.
