England manager Lee Carsley responds to his claim that Cole Palmer can play left-back

Some eyebrows were raised last week after the current England manager shared his thoughts of Chelsea’s top performer right now.

Everything that happens at Stamford Bridge seems to be going through Cole Palmer right now, and this has reflected in his statistics so far this season.

The 22-year-old has the most combined goals and assists this season, and saw a sensational 12 months capped off with winning the England player of the year award.

With his brilliance clear to see, it is no surprise that he has been the topic of discussion for many at the top of the game recently.

Last week, Lee Carsley stated that it was actually an option to play Palmer at left-back, with there not being a natural option in the England squad.

Carsley clarifies left-back is not Palmer’s best position

However, the interim boss has clarified to Sky Sports that this would not get the best out of the Chelsea man, and his good form has put him in line for a start tomorrow night.

He said: “Probably not left-back. Cole’s in fantastic form, I think he’s carried that into this week.

“He’s such an exciting player. A player that I’ve worked with for four or five years now. So Cole, along with a number of the other attacking players has put himself into a great position to start the game tomorrow.”

Levi Colwill could play left-back for England

The left-back position on the pitch could actually still be occupied with a Chelsea player. Levi Colwill looks arguably the best option to play there in the upcoming games.

This is despite him really raising his level this season when being played as a natural centre-back, rather than the wide role Mauricio Pochettino had him featuring in.

Another Chelsea player who will be hoping for some minutes is Noni Madueke, with him impressive off the bench in his debut for the Three Lions in the previous international break.
