‘I love’: Enzo Maresca raves about £12m Chelsea player who played out of position in the Conference League

Enzo Maresca will have been extremely happy with what he saw from his Chelsea players in their second group game of the Conference League tonight.

The Blues beat Panathinaikos 4-1 away from home, with a number of players continuing to stake a claim for a Premier League start.

Joao Felix was on target twice, while Chelsea fans were very impressed with Mykhailo Mudryk’s display on the left.

With Chelsea leaving five first team stars at home for the trip to Greece, it was believed that some players may be forced to feature in a slightly unnatural position.

This was the case for Renato Veiga. After featuring at left-back and in midfield already this season, he started tonight at centre-back.

Enzo Maresca wowed by Renato Veiga

Despite almost scoring a freak own goal late on, it was a very impressive display from the Portugal international.

Maresca was full of praise for the youngster, saying his versatility is exactly what he loves about his current Chelsea squad.

He said to Football London: “Renato, I just said to him inside the changing room, he has played as a centre-back, full-back, holding midfielder, attacking midfielder.

“I said the reason why the reason why I love Chelsea is because many players can be versatile. It is better for the team and for the players.

“Today, if you just play one position; I don’t think it’s enough. You need to learn to play more positions.”

Veiga competing with Marc Cucurella for Chelsea start

Many expected Veiga to start against Liverpool at the weekend, however the return from injury for captain Reece James saw him return to the side for the first time this season.

Marc Cucurella is the starting left-back at the moment, however competition in the position is only going to improve performances from both candidates.

Despite all the signings made by Chelsea over the summer, there are few that have been as impressive as the addition of Veiga for just £12m, with him already making a real impact for both club and country this season.

He is likely to be back on the bench though this weekend when the Blues are back in action against Newcastle United in the Premier League.
