‘I told him’: Enzo Maresca shares what he told Noni Madueke before he scored for Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest

Enzo Maresca can have one man in particular to thank for Chelsea managing to leave Stamford Bridge with a point this weekend.

After falling behind, responsibility landed at the shoulders of Noni Madueke to rescue his side from what would have been their first league defeat since opening day.

Madueke was described as the shining light by some pundits, and he certainly staked his claim for more minutes after the international break.

He will no doubt have been looking over his shoulder at the good form of Pedro Neto as reason to be a tad concerned about his place in the Premier League starting side.

After finding the net, the winger seemed to have a message for Maresca as part of his celebrations, with him making a dart towards his manager.

Maresca told Madueke he needed to score

The Italian thinks he may know why this happened, telling the official Chelsea website about a conversation they had during the week about his lack of goals in recent games.

He said: “Very happy for Noni. During the week, I told him that he scored three goals against Wolves and then he stopped scoring. Today, he scored. Probably [that was why he celebrated the way he did], yes.”

Maresca has been loyal to those players in his starting side since joining the club, where it would have been easy to chop and change with all of the quality he has at his disposal.

Madueke holding off Neto for a place in the side is a similar story to how Nicolas Jackson is withstanding the challenge of Christopher Nkunku for the striker role.

The Frenchman was used off the bench yesterday, and spurned a golden chance to give the Blues the win late on.

Madueke will be hoping to add to his one England appearance in the upcoming fixtures, with him again being called up to the national team alongside Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill.
