Report: What Reece James now plans to do amid Barcelona rumours

Chelsea captain Reece James has recently been linked with a move to Barcelona.

Reece James is yet to play a game for Chelsea this season because of injury, resulting in Malo Gusto coming into the team.

It was a similar theme last term, with Gusto also having to cover for James during the 2023/24 campaign because of the right-back’s fitness issues.

According to journalist Matt Law, James is due to return to training this week in a boost for Enzo Maresca.

Reece James’ current plans

Any Barcelona fans hoping to see James join their club could be left feeling disappointed.

According to GiveMeSport, the 24-year-old is only focusing on getting fit again and back into the Chelsea team.

The above comes after a report from FootballTransfers claimed that James’ representatives had approached Barcelona and Benfica about a potential transfer.

Earlier this month, Fabrizio Romano stated that Chelsea have had the chance to sell James in the past but opted not to.

Liverpool too soon for Reece James

Chelsea’s next game is against Liverpool in the Premier League. It is a match Maresca would love to have James available for.

However, it is likely to come too soon for his captain, whom the club will not want to see rushed back after all of his injury problems.

It means that Gusto is likely to start at Anfield on Sunday. The 21-year-old continues to be an attacking threat for Chelsea in James’ absence.

Gusto provided Christopher Nkunku with a nice assist in Chelsea’s 5-0 win against Barrow in the third round of the Carabao Cup last month.

The former Lyon man and the rest of his Chelsea teammates will have to be at their best if they are to return to Stamford Bridge with something.

Liverpool are the team to beat at the moment, with Arne Slot’s men currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table.
