'I just feel': Ben Foster criticises one thing he's seen from Chelsea this season

In general, Chelsea supporters should be pretty optimistic with how the first few months have gone under Enzo Maresca’s leadership.

Chelsea sit third in the Premier League table during this current international break, which is a reward for some good performances. Meanwhile, the Blues are top of the Conference League groups stages, but they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle United.

Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea manager, has created a feel-good factor at Stamford Bridge since his appointment in the summer. Will he finally be the long-term answer in the manager’s dugout for the current ownership, though?

Paul Scholes recently admitted he underestimated Chelsea boss Maresca at the start of the season, and he’s been impressed by what he’s done so far at Stamford Bridge.

Ben Foster thinks Chelsea lack belief in the big games

Ben Foster’s one criticism of this Chelsea side is that he feels they’re lacking conviction going into their big fixtures.

So far this season, Maresca’s side have only picked up two points from their four league games versus Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Foster said via his YouTube channel: “I just feel they lack a little bit of belief going into these big games… When they play the big boys, I feel they go into it thinking don’t lose. Maybe that’s a progression thing.”

Darren Bent has urged Chelsea’s Cole Palmer to contribute more in the crunch fixtures. The same should apply to the whole team versus the elite sides, too.

Frank Leboeuf actually thinks Palmer played okay in Chelsea’s draw with Arsenal, despite the fact that he failed to score or assist.

Chelsea struggling against the top teams

If the Blues want to finish in the top four this season, surely they’ll need to pick up some positive results when facing teams around the top of table. So far, that’s been a challenging ask for them.

Here is a look at Chelsea’s record this season in the league meetings against the traditional top six clubs:

Chelsea’s next contest against a top six club is on 8 December when they travel to Tottenham. In fairness, they’ve won seven of their previous nine matches across all competitions against London rivals Spurs.
