Troy Deeney says ‘very powerful’ Chelsea player is actually limited under Enzo Maresca

It’s been a generally positive start for Enzo Maresca during his first few months as the Chelsea head coach, but it’s just been suggested that he’s not always getting the best out of one player.

Enzo Maresca, 44, has impressed a lot of people to date as the Chelsea manager. In 18 games this season across all competitions, they have 10 wins, four draws, and four defeats.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta recently praised Maresca’s impact at Chelsea this season.

Interestingly, the Blues sit third in the Premier League table during this November international break after Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal.

Troy Deeney claims Chelsea’s Pedro Neto is restricted on the left wing

BBC pundit Troy Deeney has just delivered an interesting verdict on Chelsea’s Pedro Neto.

He explained that the 24-year-old attacker is a much bigger threat on the right wing rather than the left wing. In fairness, he scored a superb equalising goal versus Arsenal at the weekend after cutting infield from the right and unleashing a shot from outside the box on his stronger left foot.

When discussing Chelsea’s Neto on Match of the Day 2, Deeney said: “When he is out on the left, he is limited in what he can do because he is very powerful, very quick, but he is all left foot.

“He hugs the touchline when he is out on this left-hand side. But when you put him out on the right-hand side, because he has that pace, look at [Jurrien] Timber, he has to back off. If you back off, that’s the type of ball that comes in and on another day Cole Palmer gets on the end of it.

“What he also does here (for his goal), which is excellent. while he is organising, he has a little point there telling people what to do. He spots the danger. There is a big old space there… With a player of this much quality, look, never once looks at passing it. He knows he is getting his shot off. It’s a great strike into the bottom corner. He has had a real breakthrough season.”

Micah Richards agrees Chelsea’s Neto is better off the right rather than the left, which does seem to be a popular opinion.

The versatile Portuguese forward has had plenty of minutes on the left wing because of Noni Madueke’s role on the opposite flank. Will that change after the international break, though?

The real Pedro Neto is turning up at Chelsea

Neto’s debut season at Stamford Bridge has been a bit of a slow burner so far, but he’s beginning to really find his feet in the starting XI now.

Based on current form, the left-footed speedster belongs in Chelsea’s best line-up.

Competition Appearances Goals Assists
Premier League 11 1 2
Conference League 2 1 1
Conference League qualifiers 1 0 0
Carabao Cup 1 1 0

Gary Neville recently called Neto a “fantastic” winger he wants to see more from because he’s got all the individual talent. It does feel like week by week the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star is growing in stature.

With Madueke’s form dropping off a bit in recent weeks, Neto may deserve a run in the side as the right-winger.
