What Chelsea's former head of youth recruitment said about Omari Hutchinson as £20m Ipswich man now prepares to face the Blues

Omari Hutchinson will be looking to get one over his former club Chelsea when he faces them on Monday.

Ipswich Town signed Omari Hutchinson from Chelsea permanently in the summer, and Kieran McKenna’s men take on the Blues in their next Premier League fixture.

It could see the attacking midfielder play against his old side, whom he only ever made two first-team appearances for.

Chelsea wanted £30m for Hutchinson, but the 21-year-old ended up joining Ipswich for £20m. Despite the club’s willingness to let Hutchinson go, they did seem to really rate the player when he first joined them.

Jim Fraser thought Omari Hutchinson was a ‘brilliant addition’ to Chelsea

At the time of Hutchinson’s arrival at Chelsea, Jim Fraser was the club’s head of youth recruitment.

And it is fair to say that he was delighted by the Blues’ acquisition of the England U21 international from London rivals Arsenal.

On the club’s capture of Hutchinson back in 2022, Fraser told Chelsea’s official website: “We are delighted that Omari has agreed to sign for Chelsea. He is a brilliant addition who joins us as an exciting emerging talent hoping to make a quick impression in the senior game.”

Hutchinson will now be looking to down Chelsea when they travel to Portman Road on Monday. He could be helped by Liam Delap, who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.

However, Fabrizio Romano doubts Delap will leave Ipswich next month, meaning that Chelsea may have to wait until the summer to sign Hutchinson’s teammate.

Omari Hutchinson made right decision leaving Chelsea for Ipswich Town

Ipswich may be fighting for survival, while Chelsea are competing at the right end of the table. Nevertheless, Hutchinson still made the right call swapping Enzo Maresca‘s side for McKenna’s team.

As mentioned earlier, Hutchinson only got to play two times for the Chelsea senior squad. At Ipswich this season, he has already made 17 appearances in the Premier League and even managed to score a goal.

Ultimately, there, the former Chelsea and Arsenal academy player is developing. That would not have been the case if he remained at Stamford Bridge, where he would have had to compete against the likes of Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke for a place.
