Enzo Maresca says two Chelsea players won't be involved in the squad vs Morecambe because they could leave

There are several Chelsea players that may be edging closer to leaving the club during the January transfer window.

Enzo Maresca is doing a great job as the Chelsea manager working with the Blues squad, which is filled with so many quality individuals that will be desperate to start regularly. At times, the Italian head coach has rotated heavily between league and cup competitions.

The club’s next game is Saturday’s match at home to League Two side Morecambe in the FA Cup third round. Chelsea’s predicted XI versus Morecambe includes wholesale changes from the recent 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

Enzo Maresca confirms Ben Chilwell and Cesare Casadei could be leaving

Maresca has confirmed during Friday’s pre-match press conference for the Morecambe cup tie that Chelsea duo Ben Chilwell and Cesare Casadei won’t be involved in tomorrow’s squad.

Both Blues stars may be leaving the club during the current transfer window, so they won’t be risked in the FA Cup.

Maresca said via Chelsea’s official YouTube channel: “Chilwell, for him, I think in this moment is thinking he is probably going to leave, so it is probably better to avoid using him to avoid that kind of situation, an injury or this kind of things. So the plan is not to use Ben tomorrow.”

He added: “Yes, Cesare will not be in the squad. It is more or less the same situation as Ben Chilwell. For him, probably in this moment, the idea is not to allow him to play some minutes in case there is any opportunity for him to go and play. At this moment, this is the best thing for him.”

West Ham hold interest in signing Chelsea’s Chilwell as new Hammers boss Graham Potter eyes a reunion with the left-back. The 28-year-old defender is crying out for a mid-season move because he’s frozen out under Maresca.

As for 22-year-old Blues midfielder Casadei, he’s also linked with a potential exit this month. Torino are preparing a new bid to sign Chelsea youngster Casadei, which includes a sell-on clause.

Will Chelsea look at replacements?

If Chilwell and Casadei both leave the club, you could argue there’s no need to replace them because the squad still has significant numbers. However, the Blues are linked with left-backs and central midfielders in the transfer rumour mill.

For example, PSG’s Nuno Mendes is on Chelsea’s left-back shortlist. If he joined, he’d surely be coming to push hard for a spot in the XI.

As for potential midfield interest, there’s a few different names cropping up, including Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo. Chelsea could launch a move for Man United’s Mainoo once they receive encouragement from the player. Similarly, he’s a high-profile name that would expect regular minutes.
