'He is improving a lot': Enzo Maresca claims Chelsea star Levi Colwill is getting so much better at one thing

The Chelsea defence is under a bit of scrutiny right now because of its frequent changes and vulnerability, but Levi Colwill remains a consistent performer in the backline.

Levi Colwill, 21, has emerged as a key figure in the Chelsea squad this season. The left-footed centre-back, who came through the Blues academy as a youngster, is now an ever-present in the senior team.

Apart from Moises Caicedo and Cole Palmer, Colwill has made the most league appearances for the Blues so far this season by starting in 18 of their 19 top-flight games.

Jason Cundy wants Chelsea’s defence built around Colwill, which is something that’s naturally happening at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca hails Levi Colwill improvement

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has delivered a glowing verdict on Colwill’s season so far. In particular, he thinks that the England international has taken giant strides forward with his leadership.

When discussing Chelsea’s Colwill, Maresca said via The Evening Standard: “I can see the leader day by day, since we started in pre-season, something that he can improve in terms of leadership. He is improving a lot

“Levi, even if he is not wearing the armband, he is one of the captains and in the future, he could be a captain of this club. Since we started, he is improving a lot.”

Colwill does look like captain material for Chelsea at certain times on the football pitch. When you consider club captain Reece James is barely available, it may be worth changing the armband on a permanent basis.

John Obi Mikel would like to see Colwill captaining Chelsea, but we’ve had Enzo Fernandez step into the role as the skipper in recent games.

Levi Colwill is the future of Chelsea’s defence

Colwill has been spoken about so highly for many years after coming through the academy system, and it’s great to see him shining now in the senior team.

Most importantly, the 21-year-old centre-half is enjoying a really impressive individual campaign so far in Maresca’s side, where he’s so influential both with and without the ball.

Colwill plays such a big role when Chelsea builds out from the back with his composure in possession and his incredible passing range. On top of that, the academy graduate reads the play superbly well, so the defensive side of his game is only getting better.

Next on the agenda for Chelsea, they need to find a long-term partner for Colwill at centre-back.
