‘Serioisly considering’: Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea could use £25m player in negotiations for Marc Guehi

A singular defender has seemingly come to the front of the queue when it comes to players that Chelsea could sign this month to address their injury woes.

The Blues are reportedly keen on bringing Marc Guehi back to the club, as they desperately seek for cover following long-term injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.

Those at Stamford Bridge will be more than aware of the defender’s ability after he came through the academy at the club, even making a couple of first team appearances before he was sold.

Enzo Maresca is reportedly a big fan of Guehi, and his qualities would seem to perfectly suit what the manager is looking for from his centre-backs.

Chelsea could use Trevoh Chalobah in negotiations for Marc Guehi

Another name who has been mentioned as a potential answer to Chelsea’s problems is Trevoh Chalobah, who is currently a teammate of Guehi as part of his loan at Crystal Palace.

The Englishman has enjoyed a successful spell away from Stamford Bridge as of late, however it was thought until just days ago that he was not part of the club’s long-term plans.

Fabrizio Romano has stated that this could still be the case, with Chelsea having the chance to use Chalobah as leverage in their negotiations for Guehi.

He said: “Chelsea are seriously considering bringing in a new centre-back in the January transfer window. It’s a strong possibility.

“A player they like is Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace. Let’s see if Chelsea make a bid. Remember that Chalobah could be a point of contact between Chelsea and Crystal Palace in case Chelsea decide to attack for Marc Guehi. Chelsea consider Marc Guehi as one of the most interesting options around.”

Chelsea were looking for a fee of £25m from Palace for a permanent deal last summer, and could use that as a method to take money away from the fee demanded for Guehi.

Chelsea looking at seven centre-backs in January

It has been reported that the Palace captain is not the only option they are looking at in the January transfer window.

Reports stated Chelsea are looking at seven different options as potential signings, including Premier League stars Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi.

The likes of Tomas Araujo and Ousmane Diomande are also on the radar, with them being tracked by the club for a number of months now.

The Benfica man has been particularly impressive to Chelsea, with them being described as ‘in love with Araujo’ in the past.
