What Robert Sanchez did vs Bournemouth that sums up why Chelsea must sign a new goalkeeper in January - opinion

Chelsea’s poor run of results in the Premier League continued as held them to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer had given Chelsea a first-half lead in glorious style, however, just as on Boxing Day, their opponents had threatened to complete a second-half comeback win.

Moises Caicedo gave away a penalty following an error from Romeo Lavia before Chelsea transfer target Antoine Semenyo fired home what looked to be the winner.

Thankfully, club captain Reece James stepped up with a fine free-kick to level proceedings in added time. Despite the late drama, fingers were pointed at a number of individuals as what looked like a certain win slipped away.

Robert Sanchez shows why Chelsea need a new goalkeeper

The usual culprit for criticism this season has been Robert Sanchez, even though he has kept the faith of manager Enzo Maresca for Premier League fixtures.

While the Spaniard was not at fault for either goal today, familiar murmurings were heard around Stamford Bridge whenever he was in possession of the ball.

There was a moment in the 35th minute where Chelsea were under no pressure at all and hadn’t even faced a shot from their opponents as they chased a second goal.

Sanchez gave the ball straight to Bournemouth on the edge of the box, with them hitting the post from the eventual chance.

Chelsea fans have been calling for a new goalkeeper for the majority of the season, and the way Maresca plays means someone comfortable on the ball is essential.

Could Chelsea sign a new goalkeeper in January?

Chelsea are not currently being linked with the signing of any new goalkeepers in the January transfer window.

The Blues coaches have a lot of faith in the aforementioned Sanchez, and believe Filip Jorgensen is perfect for Maresca’s system.

They also have Mike Penders coming at the end of the season, although it may be a couple of seasons before he is a regular in the first team.

Nevertheless, there is a decision on who will start between the sticks on Monday night when the Blues host Wolves.
