Gabriel Agbonlahor and Jeff Stelling disagree on where Chelsea will finish in the Premier League this season

Chelsea’s poor form in the last couple of months means that they’re in the thick of a battle to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Since Boxing Day, Chelsea have only picked up two wins in eight games in the Premier League. As a result, they’ve now slipped down to sixth position in the division table.

Even though the top five teams may qualify for the Champions League because of England’s coefficient ranking with UEFA, Enzo Maresca’s side are quickly dropping down the league.

John Obi Mikel claims Maresca would’ve left under the previous Chelsea ownership because of the team’s inconsistency. It feels like the Italian head coach may get more time to turn things around again, though.

Gabriel Agbonlahor and Jeff Stelling disagree on Chelsea prediction

According to Gabriel Agbonlahor, Chelsea will do enough to sneak into next campaign’s Champions League by finishing fifth in the league. However, Jeff Stelling completely disagrees with him.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “I think Liverpool win the league. Arsenal second. Manchester City will finish third, they will continue their good run. I’m going to go with Bournemouth in fourth position… I think Chelsea will sneak into it (fifth position). The pressure is on Chelsea and they have got good players. If Cole Palmer goes on a run again.”

Stelling responded in the same video: “I’m going Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth for my top five. I don’t see it happening for Chelsea. I don’t see where the goals are coming from. I think a lot of that belief has disappeared. So much depends on Cole Palmer.”

Jamie Carragher says it’ll be a “disaster” if Chelsea miss out on the Champions League. If they do, it’ll be a third straight year of not playing in Europe’s elite club competition.

It was claimed earlier in February that Chelsea’s owners are not concerned by Maresca despite the recent run. However, this was before the crushing 3-0 league defeat away to Brighton. The external noise of unrest from supporters is certainly starting to grow louder with every poor result.

Chelsea need to get a move on

Chelsea simply must get back on track with a run of consecutive positive results.

Here is a look at who the Blues play in their next four league games, including two clubs in the division’s relegation zone:

On paper, the upcoming trips to Aston Villa and Arsenal look extremely difficult. The home matches against Southampton and Leicester City both feel like absolute must-win fixtures, though.

Now that Chelsea are out of both domestic cup competitions, all the pressure is on what they do in the Premier League and Conference League during the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
