Jason Cundy noticed Chelsea player was 'absolutely spent' after defeat to Aston Villa, he gave everything
Jason Cundy thought one Chelsea player gave it his absolute all in the defeat to Aston Villa.
Unfortunately, Chelsea picked up zero points in the Premier League after losing 2-1 away to Villa on Saturday evening.
The Blues went ahead through Enzo Fernandez’s early goal. However, Villa’s Marco Asensio netted twice in the second period to flip the match on its head.
In the Chelsea player ratings against Villa, it was a real mixed bag. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca should definitely be pleased with certain aspects of the performance, but it’s now only two wins in the last 10 league matches.

Pedro Neto was shattered after performance vs Aston Villa
Jason Cundy noticed that Chelsea’s Pedro Neto, 24, was “absolutely spent” at full time after his efforts against Villa.
It was a surprise to see the winger play in a new role as the central striker, something he did to great effect. As well as assist Fernandez’s goal, he worked his socks off with so much running to help his teammates.
“Pedro Neto looks spent by the way, absolutely spent. He’s worked his tail off,” Cundy said via Chelsea’s official app (7:35pm, 22 February.)
| Minutes played | Goals | Assists | Total shots | Chances created | Touches in opposition box | Accurate passes | Match rating |
| 90 | 0 | 1 | 4 | 4 | 9 | 24/26 (92%) | 7.5 |
During the first half of Villa versus Chelsea, Premier League pundit Matt Holland was seriously impressed by what he saw from Neto.
Holland said via the Premier League’s official website (5:41pm): “Pedro Neto has been crucial, he realises where the space is and bends his run, before Enzo arrives from that midfield position – and he makes no mistake. Pedro Neto has been so effective early on in the game.”
Martin Keown urged Neto to step up because of his quiet form this season. Well, he’s made a good start in answering that.

Pedro Neto’s best performance in a Chelsea shirt
During Neto’s debut season with the Blues so far, he’s struggled to find any consistency in his game. He reminded everyone of his individual quality with his gutsy performance at Villa Park, though.
The Portuguese speedster does need to increase his overall attacking output.
- 30 Chelsea appearances
- 4 goals
- 6 assists
However, in Chelsea’s loss to Villa, Neto was the clear shining light for his display in a different role.
Earlier in February, Chelsea supporters suggested Neto at striker due to the current absence of injured centre-forward Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu. Based off the weekend, Neto is a far better option than Christopher Nkunku to lead the line because he’s got the attributes to stretch the opposition.
Glenn Hoddle wants Neto in Chelsea’s XI and feels he deserves an extended run in the team without dropping out. He should be one of the first names on the team sheet for the Tuesday’s match at home to Southampton.
