Report: Chelsea have triggered clause in £71m star’s very bizarre contract after impressing this season

Chelsea’s form has not been great lately, but the Blues have still had some very good performers this season.

For example, the likes of Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo have done really well for Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea also have players out on loan who are having solid seasons, including Andrey Santos and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Kepa could now join Bournemouth or Al-Ittihad permanently as he continues to impress during his loan spell at the Cherries.

Chelsea have extended Kepa Arrizabalaga’s contract with clause

Before Kepa joined Bournemouth on loan last summer, the goalkeeper signed a one-year contract extension, as his existing deal was set to expire in 2025.

However, it does not look like his contract extension was a straightforward one.

According to Marca, Chelsea had to trigger a clause in his new deal before 31 January for it to actually go into 2026.

The same outlet claims that the Blues have now done that, meaning that the 30-year-old will not be leaving Stamford Bridge on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Kepa has done better than Robert Sanchez this term, but the former Athletic Bilbao star returning to Chelsea and staying there seems very unlikely.

Kepa Arrizabalaga’s season in numbers

Again, Kepa has performed well in the Premier League this season. After failing to convince at Chelsea, the Spaniard has regained some of his credibility during his loan spell at the Vitality Stadium.

As per FBref, Kepa has made 17 appearances in the top flight and recorded a save percentage of 77.1%. It is the highest in the division.

He has conceded 21 goals and kept five clean sheets, so it is clear to see that the £71m Spain international has done a great job between the sticks for Andoni Iraola’s side.

Bournemouth wanted to sign Renato Veiga from Chelsea during the January transfer window but never managed to agree a deal with their Premier League rivals. However, with Kepa not in Maresca’s plans, they could have a great opportunity to buy him in the summer.
