Report: Enzo Maresca is 'crazy' about Renato Veiga but one thing convinced the Chelsea boss to allow loan move
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca still appears to be a fan of Renato Veiga despite hardly using him this season.
In total, Renato Veiga made just seven appearances in the Premier League before joining Juventus on loan last month.
The 21-year-old is a very versatile footballer, capable of playing at left-back, centre-back and in midfield. However, that did not help him break into the Chelsea team.
While he is quite a flexible player, Veiga’s preference seems to be centre-half. All of his appearances at Juventus have come there so far.

No buy option softened Enzo Maresca’s stance on Renato Veiga
Maresca preferred Marc Cucurella at left-back over Veiga and did not give the Portuguese a chance in central defence. But it looks like he still wanted to keep him.
According to Tuttosport, the Chelsea boss is “crazy” about Veiga and only accepted a departure because Juventus’ loan deal did not have a buy option in it.
From Veiga’s perspective, he will be delighted that the transfer went through. The Portugal international is now getting to play in his preferred position and is thriving there.
Veiga excelled against Inter Milan last weekend, helping the Old Lady to beat their rivals 1-0.

Enzo Maresca thinks Renato Veiga owes Chelsea
Veiga only became a full Portugal international after his move to Chelsea, and Maresca believes he has the club to thank for that.
When Maresca spoke about Veiga‘s future last month, he said: “The only thing I can say is that we bought Renato from Basel, he has played in different positions and has played well. This has allowed him to be in the senior national team for the first time in his life. Even if he is not playing in his position, it means he can do well in the position he is playing.”
Maresca never really gave Veiga the chance to start paying Chelsea back, constantly overlooking him when he was still at Stamford Bridge.
When Cucurella has not started, for example, the Italian has opted for Malo Gusto or Reece James over Veiga. It is no surprise that the former Basel man left, then.
Proving himself at Juventus, though, Veiga could be set for a much bigger role at Stamford Bridge next season, especially if the Blues fail to sign a new centre-back. Chelsea are currently being linked with David Hancko and some other names.
