Tosin Adarabioyo explains why Chelsea were 'punished' in 2-1 loss to Brighton, supporters won't accept his reason

Tosin Adarabioyo’s explanation for Chelsea’s 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round defeat to Brighton will not go down well with supporters.

Enzo Maresca’s side scored first as Bart Verbruggen spilt Cole Palmer’s cross into his own goal after five minutes.

The early advantage handed the Blues the perfect opportunity to control the game but Brighton equalised just seven minutes later and went on to win the match.

Adarabioyo shared his verdict on Chelsea’s poor display versus the Seagulls, with a look ahead to the repeat fixture on Friday.

Tosin Adarabioyo reflects on Brighton vs Chelsea

Brighton’s opening goal came from Joel Veltman’s simple cross into the box which both centre-backs (Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah) failed to deal with.

It was probably more Chalobah’s fault as the former was at least marking Danny Welbeck but what matters most is that Georginio Rutter was unchallenged as he headed past Robert Sanchez.

“I see it as a lapse of concentration sometimes,” Adarabioyo said about conceding shortly after scoring on Chelsea’s official website.

“We didn’t break them down and create good enough chances to secure the game and we got punished at the other end.”

Mistakes are part of football but Chelsea’s defenders have made far too many lately. Besides the 5-0 thrashing of League Two side Morecambe, the West London club have not kept a clean sheet since Everton away (0-0) on December 22.

This is simply not good enough if the Blues have aspirations of qualifying for the Champions League – and supporters, especially those who attended the Brighton defeat, will not accept ‘lapses of concentration’ as an excuse.

Adarabioyo added: “Our main focus is now coming back here on Friday. We will analyse this game throughout tomorrow and throughout the week, and we will come back stronger on Friday.”

Brighton defeat proves Chelsea still need centre-back signings

With every passing week, it becomes more apparent that Wesley Fofana is Chelsea’s best central defender. It’s no coincidence that results have declined since he suffered another injury.

Maresca’s other options include Levi Colwill, who messed up against West Ham on Monday, and Chalobah, whose error cost the team on Saturday.

Benoit Badiashile is also injury prone and it would be unfair to throw new signing Aaron Anselmino into the mix at this stage.

Adarabioyo is probably the pick of the available bunch at the moment, although he hasn’t been totally convincing this season.

All roads lead to Chelsea shelling out even more money in the summer transfer window in pursuit of a Thiago Silva replacement.
