'Move away from the past’: Sir Jim Ratcliffe makes claim about Jadon Sancho after he left Manchester United for Chelsea

Of all the signings that have been made by Chelsea for this season, none proved as much of a gamble as the one of Jadon Sancho.

The Blues took a chance on the England International on deadline day, after it looked like he was out of the plans at Manchester United.

Sancho’s rift with Erik ten Hag was public news at this point, and a fresh start looked exactly what he needed at a club who were keen to prove themselves as a serious contender.

The winger got off to a great start to life at Stamford Bridge, contributing nearly as many assists as games played in the early section of the season.

It was reported that a deal for Sancho would be made permanent if Chelsea finish 14th or higher, a circumstance which is now certain to be met.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe says it’s time to move on from Jadon Sancho

There is already an agreement on Sancho’s wages ahead of his permanent move, however United are still going to be paying the price for the investment they made into him.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe told BBC Sport that that part of the financial issues being suffered by the Red Devils right now stem from the lavish spending in recent seasons, with Sancho named as one of those they are paying the price for.

He said: “If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho. These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.

“For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we’re paying £17m to buy him in the summer.

“It takes time for us to move away from the past into a new place in the future.”

Chelsea chiefs thoughts on Sancho

While United were clearly not best pleased with the impact the attacker had for them, it seems the Blues may have been expecting a bit more from him too.

It has been reported that Chelsea chiefs are unhappy with Sancho and the impact he has had since joining, with his permanent addition to the squad imminent.

The Blues are keeping their options open when it comes to signing another winger in the summer. Rafael Leao’s name continues to crop up in reports.

They will also be welcoming the highly-touted youngster Estevao Willian to their first team squad, with the expectation being that he does not move on loan this summer.
