Enzo Maresca is about to ruin his relationship with Chelsea fans after comments following draw with Ipswich - opinion

Chelsea blew a fantastic opportunity to return to the top four when they could only pick up a point against Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues drew 2-2 with their relegation threatened opponents, going into the half-time break two goals down.

Fans were not afraid to share their displeasure at Maresca at this stage, and there was a fightback from the players in the second half.

An own goal followed by a stunning Jadon Sancho strike did at least rescue a point, but the verdict was a resounding failure as far as Chelsea were concerned.

The Italian put blame on Enzo Fernandez and Robert Sanchez for playing long as a reason to why they conceded their goals, although he didn’t stop there when complaining about what he had seen at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca risking it all by blaming Chelsea fans for draw vs Ipswich

The manager told The Mail Online that he was not impressed with the environment inside the stadium, with the fans losing confidence in their players as they stared defeat in the face against a side with just four wins this season.

He said: “We lost a little bit of confidence, because we conceded, probably because of the environment. This is the moment that you have to continue doing the right things and don’t change the plan.

“We are a team that most of the time, our goal kick will start from playing short. The second goal, we decide to play long, because the environment was there, and we conceded. You have to be strong, you have to continue with the things that you are doing.”

Blaming supporters for not being behind their side when they are 2-0 down to Ipswich in a crucial game is a brave strategy from Maresca, and one that leaves him in danger of completely tarnishing the relationship he has with them.

After a comprehensive win in Europe three days before where the likes of Fernandez and Moises Caicedo didn’t play, there were very few excuses to not be good enough to beat an Ipswich side who were without Liam Delap from the start.

Maresca’s complicated relationship with Chelsea fans

After a dominant win against Southampton back in December, Blues supporters serenaded Maresca as his side threatened to make an impact on the title race.

However, fast forward to their game against Brentford last week, and away fans were directing chants at Maresca instructing his side to provide some attacking intent.

Even since the first league game of the season against Manchester City, Maresca has disagreed with Chelsea fans who have shown their frustration at what they are seeing this season.

While there have certainly been some occasions where this has been unjustified, Sunday’s draw is not one of those, and the boss should look internally at himself and the players as to why they couldn’t return to the Champions League places.
