Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna makes claim about 'brilliant' Jadon Sancho following 2-2 draw with Chelsea

Chelsea were in serious danger of suffering an embarrassing defeat at the hands of relegation candidates Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Blues fans fumed at Enzo Maresca as their side went into the half-time break 2-0 down at home, staring a damning defeat directly in the face.

There was some second half fight to save a point. Chelsea scored 20 seconds after the restart, before Jadon Sancho’s stunning goal brought them level.

The winger started on the bench as Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke played together on the wings. The latter offered far more threat than the Portugal international.

Kieran McKenna wowed by Chelsea’s Jadon Sancho after Ipswich draw

Maresca praised Sancho after the game, and his impact from the bench backed up his strong showing in Europe against Legia Warsaw.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna was full of praise for his own side’s performance, however admitted they were undone by a moment of quality from the loanee who had come off the bench.

He said to the East Anglian Daily Times: “Second half, I actually thought we played better than the first half. We had more chances. It was, for lots of the second half, a pretty even game, both teams pushing for the goals.

“We’re disappointed to concede right from kick-off, that was a big setback, but I think the response to it was very, very good.

“And actually, from that moment, where it can end up a really, really difficult second half, it was, I think, until the equaliser, a pretty even second half. We looked as likely to get the next goal as they did.

“Of course, it’s a brilliant moment from Jadon (Sancho) to score and make it 2-2. And then both teams were going for the win. It took a couple of great saves from Alex Palmer, to be fair. But we had our moments going up the other end and it was a really good game.

“The players gave everything to it again and I think they can be proud of their efforts.”

Chelsea’s stance on Jadon Sancho

It was expected that Chelsea’s loan of Sancho was going to be made an obligation presuming the Blues finished above 14th in the Premier League this season.

However, it has emerged Chelsea can opt out of the signing by paying a small fee to Manchester United, giving them the opportunity to focus on other potential winger targets.

The most recent report stated that it is more likely Sancho returns to Old Trafford, with his performances particularly in 2025 leaving a lot to be desired.

There is belief that Borussia Dortmund are still keen on signing Sancho after taking him on loan for the second half of last season.

The England international is open to moving back to the Bundesliga side, however will still be hoping he can prove from now until the end of the season that he has a future at Stamford Bridge.
